Do You Have One of America’s 10 Least Stressful Jobs?

Feeling overworked and overwhelmed? Maybe it’s time for a career change to one of these 10 fields.

1. Biomedical Engineer: One would think developing products to detect cancer might make for a stressful environment, but many biomedical engineers embrace the fact that the tools they’re creating could save a life. Although busy, these pros also enjoy a lot of downtime while bacteria incubates or enzymes react, giving them flexible schedules and the chance to focus on other responsibilities.

2. Transportation Engineer: These workers get to deal with something many engineers avoid: people. Transportation engineers love what they do because they often interact with the folks that use the crosswalks or traffic systems that they develop. Plus, it helps that cities always tend to have more transportation projects on the docket, keeping down the stress of job loss.

3. Statistician: The nice balance between individual thought and group collaboration helps the day go by quickly for statisticians. But the opportunity to work in a variety of environments, while also developing solutions to complex problems, creates truly contented workers. Of course, a nice paycheck and job security doesn’t hurt either.

4. Web Developer: These professionals might work hard, but the job also offers fun and freedom. With deadlines weeks or months away, web developers often set their own schedule, only spending as much time as needed in the office. While this can include 50 to 60 hour weeks, companies tend to reward the website creators with parties and other freebies.

5. Geographic Information Systems Analyst: In emergencies, geographical analysts can experience a lot of stress. After all, tracking where an oil spill will spread could be one of their responsibilities. But that’s out of the ordinary. A more typical — and lower-stress — assignment might be suggesting ideal locations for stores or forecasting flood zones. The challenging environment allows for creative release, plus there’s decent job security.

6. Technical Writer: Technical writers have what many crave: autonomy. They often work as their own project manager while writing guidelines and instructions for new tools. Sometimes they even get to interact with the product during the development stages, assuring the instructions are easy to understand for the less tech-savvy. And with projects often started months out, the fear of a tight deadline is minimized.

7. Test Software Development Engineer: It’s easier to relax at your desk when your job mirrors what you would normally do for fun. For many software developers, that’s the case. Whether it’s coding new commands or testing for software bugs, the fact that engineers tend to enjoy those tasks makes pulling the occasional all-nighter nothing to get uptight about.

8. Marketing Consultant: As a consultant, these professionals enjoy independence and the flexibility to set their own schedule and even work from home. Sure, the need to line up jobs can be stressful. But that’s balanced by the chance to work with company leaders and dive into new businesses. That keeps things interesting.

9. Civil Engineer: Similar to traffic engineers, civil engineers help design infrastructure. And they say there’s no better feeling than seeing something you thought of — like a bridge or a highway — working just as you planned. What’s more, the chance to work anywhere — be it in government, private sector, or academia — and in any city of their choosing allows these engineers to handpick their assignments.

10. Optometrist: Options, that’s what optometrists have. If they want to work in a group setting, they can join an organization. If they want to set their own hours, they can open a solo practice. Plus, they have the opportunity teach, research or work as a consultant. And don’t forget the sense of accomplishment that comes from curing someone’s troubled eyesight.

Does Corruption Matter to You?

I belong to India and since I have been born and brought up here for 30 years, and given the Right to Speech being a citizen of this country, I will voice my angst whenever my country gets gang-raped by her own citizens.

The Common Wealth Games is due in fewer than 60 days and guess what- we are getting to know the corruption rearing its ugly head once more. I have been following the national news channels pretty closely and the debates that have taken place following the disclosure of rampant corruption level the sporting event has relegated to.

Should We Have Hosted Such A Big Event?
This is quite a pertinent question. In one of the discussions on National News Channel, Mani Shankar Iyer objected the very necessity of holding such big events. His logics were loud and clear:

1 – India’s sports infrastructure is not equipped with International standards to hold such big events. The then government and their officials, who vied for hosting CWG in India a few years ago, did not care about India readiness to host such events. They spent millions of dollars to secure votes from other country members so that India could win the bid to host CWG. This is ridiculous in the first place!

How can you throw away my money out of the window to save your pseudo-national pride?

My tax money merits better treatments – please use my tax money for millions Indian citizens in the BPL bracket who are fighting for their basic needs!

2 – If you have a penchant for holding such big events to offer a fillip to Indian sports (which I suspect isn’t true), use my money to train sports people and for achieving better infrastructures at the grass root level. Use my money to encourage thousands of those budding talents before they give up their dreams due to lack of government attentions!

Why Would I Care?
I hate delving into the details of the CWG corruption. That’s for you to find out if you really care your tax money, genius!

All I can say, we live in a country where corruption is rampant to such an extent that we don’t mind waking up to it daily, seeing corruption stooping by another notch below.

If you’re still looking for an example of what I just said above, here is your daily corruption dose straight from TOI’s Sanp Judgment:

It comes as a shock that army jawans have to make do with substandard rations, as a CAG report finds. Three lakh soldiers under the Northern Command were fed rations that were six to 28 months past their consume-by date. A serious overhaul of the procurement process to ensure quality is needed. Fresh food is the bare minimum that those who risk their lives to defend the country can expect.

What Can I Do?
A lot, actually! Corruption breeds in our very mind when we become selfish and help it grow gradually. We don’t mind, for instance, feeding those government officials that have grown hungry to eat a pie of our hard-earned money to perform their basic duties and do jobs for their salary.

If you really care for your tax money, you must stand against the illegitimate demands of the corrupt officials of the Indian beaurocracy to begin with.

But corruption doesn’t begin or end with Indian beaurocracy alone. The next time you wake up finding someone robbing you off your hard-earned money, get straight with them!

What The F-acts!!!

f word count in Hollywood moviesIf Hollywood film industry were paying some royalty for using the F-word in their movies, then the man who coined the word would easily be the richest person in the world :)

It’s not uncommon to hear F words and their funny derivatives being used in practically all Hollywood flicks, but the last movie entitled “The Departed” casting Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio & Jack Nicholson just was the giddy limit!

According to Wikipedia, the movie ‘The Departed’ scores 237 on the F-word count, which comes down to 1.56 times per minute. However, it stands nowhere near the documentary which beats all other movies in race of using the F word. The documentary entitled ‘Fuck’ is the only movie made so far with the highest F-word count.

The documentary has used the F-word 824 times with a stunning average of 8.86 times per minute!!!

Now that’s quite a f-reakin’ lot, right?

PayPal SOS: How to Rescue Your Funds from PayPal

how to rescue your money from PayPal

Now that PayPal has suspended electronic fund transfers to bank accounts, you must be pretty worried over finding an alternative solution to rescue your funds from PayPal account, right?

Well, hug it or hate it, PayPal has been the most trusted platform for online transactions despite its notorious higher fees, lousy customer service quality or unreasonable actions at times.

However, under the current situation, it is only safe to withdraw your PayPal funds via PayPal check, i.e if you are gutsy enough to allow PayPal to send your check with the help of Indian Postal Department via general post. I know it hurts to lose your check at times, but fortunately, I am NOT one of those who have lost their checks.

In any case, your PayPal funds are safe in the unfortunate event of your check being lost in transit. Blame it on the Indian Post Department and not PayPal, if that happened to you (but I seriously hope it doesn’t happen to you). If your check happened to be lost in transit, PayPal would reverse the transaction initiated by you. Well, you may lose precious time in the process though. I know at times, that’s probably the hardest part to cope with.

Despite what they claim as the ideal time for a PayPal check to reach the recipient, it usually takes roughly between 15-20 days. You should have the patience to wait and count on Indian Postal Services. It is very difficult to understand though why PayPal prefers to send your checks via genera post. But as I said you can’t reason with PayPal :)

Hate them, love them, but dude, you can’t ignore them!

The bottom-line is it takes a lot of patience (sometimes it can really be a testing time) until you receive your PayPal check and cash the same at your local bank.

Too Desperate to Wait for A PayPal Check? Then you can probably try the following services until PayPal restore their service to normal:

Online Remittance: I am not sure if other Indian banks offer this service too, but ICICI Bank makes it easy for your client to pay you via its Online Remittance service. Even your client doesn’t have to worry about going physically to bank to send you your funds. They can do it online. Kindly, visit their website or contact your nearest ICICI Bank.

Western Union Money Transfer: This one is probably the quickest way to get your money online. However, their charges might appear higher to you. You can visit their website to find more about their service fees and compare them with PayPal fees. If your client is kind enough to visit one of his local stores where WUMT service is available, you can get the funds real quick.

Xoom: It is basically a money sending service, pretty much like Western Union service. All you have to do is request your client to use your bank details to initiate a money transfer. The transaction will be verified by the Xoom department before it is executed. You money should reach your bank account real fast. However, in Feb, 2010, during the PayPal crisis, Xoom was not entertaining any payment to India. Not sure if they are doing the same this time too.

2Checkout: Their customer service is much better than PayPal’s, but they levy charges on every move you make. Unlike PayPal, they have registration fees. So most likely, they will deduct some fees from the money your client sends to your 2CO account. They also have a caution money fees which they allocate to protect their interests against any potential default on your part in future. Take heart – this amount is refundable. Moreover, you can transfer your funds from PayPal to your 2CO account.

They also offer you an ATM card (they call it Payoneer Card) and you can use it at any ATM counter within and outside India. Great, right? But they levy a fee on each transaction! Now, that’s a rip-off, right?

These are my own experiences with cross-border money transfer services. Do feel free to share you experiences in the comment sections. I will be glad to answer your questions and learn more from your experiences too.
