If you thought smartphones are all about a qwerty keyword and larger display screen, think again. Smartphones are as good as the number of applications they feature. You don’t realize the full potential of your smartphone until you wake up to its applications. For instance, I just downloaded and installed some really cool applications on my Nokia E63 and they are free and extremely useful for any one wanting to stay online on the go.
Without wasting any time, here are six of them that have blown me away:
Nimbuzz: This application is probably the most fascinating of all. Nimbuzz lets you call, chat, message, and send files on the go, for free. It combines all your buddies from Skype, MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, AIM, Google Talk and more. One login, one contact list, all accounts.
See who´s online and where, call/group-call, chat/chatrooms, offline messaging, send photos/music/video, voice messaging.
Nimbuzz Mobile free to download and use. Nimbuzz will not charge or bill you for anything. However, since Nimbuzz uses your internet connection, incremental data charges from your provider will apply. We therefore strongly recommend to use the mobile client only with a flat-rate data plan or free Wifi connection.
Save Money: Instead of calling minutes, Nimbuzz uses the internet to let you make free international calls to your buddies. You can also register your VoIP account to call your friends on landlines and mobile phones.
Locate your Friends: Share your location and retrieve the location of your buddies on a map. Great for arranging face to face meetings.
Make yourself heard: If your buddies are offline, let them know you’re trying to get in touch by sending them a “Buzz”. It will start Nimbuzz Mobile on their mobile phone.
Never lose your Contacts: Use the Phonebook to back up and restore your contacts. Contacts will be backed up online. Comes in handy when you have lost your mobile phone.
SMS Preview: SMS Preview is a free application to download and use from Mobile Nordic.
The company is the winner of the 2009 GSMA Mobile Innovation Award winner for Best Mobile Consumer Application with 118 Mobile, a real world directory lookup service.
SMS Preview is one of the great features included in the application that we found a lot of people could use on it´s own, so why not share it for free? Now you can instantly preview incoming SMS messages to see what is sent and who has sent it when the message arrives without a single click!
YouTube: YouTube updated its mobile site available at m.youtube.com to include all the videos from the desktop version and to provide access to your account, the option to rate videos and post meaningful comments. To use the mobile interface, you need a phone that is able to stream 3GP files over RTSP.
But there’s a better way to play YouTube videos from your mobile phone: a Java midlet currently available for some phones from Sony Ericsson (K800, W880) and Nokia (S60 3rd Edition phones: N73, N95, E65, 6110, 6120). The JAR file for Nokia phones can be found here, in case you want to test it on unsupported phones. YouTube’s mobile application also lets you upload videos from your phone. To install it, just go to m.youtube.com/app on your phone and follow the steps described in YouTube’s help center.
“You may be wondering, Is YouTube for Mobile the same as what’s available on the Helio Ocean or Apple iPhone? In a nutshell, yes — YouTube for Mobile is all about bringing video to mobile phones. We believe in providing the best user experience possible for all users, which in some cases means different YouTube solutions for different phones,” explains the YouTube blog.
Midomi: Midomi.com makes it fun and easy to find and discover music and people. Tweet60: weets60 is the first free native twitter application for Nokia S60. It provides you with a simple and accessible way to manage your twitter account on the go, without having to use the more complicated and often slow mobile site.
Once installed Tweets60 is accessed through the application tab on your menu and will automatically connect to your twitter account, showing you new tweets, direct messages and your latest updates. You can then change your status, read the tweets of people you follow, re-tweet, and manage who you follow… you get the picture. You can even leave Tweets60 running in the background and it will automatically up-date.
